Protected Class

A group of people legally protected from housing discrimination. Federal protected classes are race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity per recent interpretation), familial status, and disability. You cannot use any of these as criteria in tenant screening, advertising, or lease terms. The standard is simple: screen on financials, rental history, and criminal background only.
